Associate Director, Adoption Strategy & Enablement
The Associate Director, Adoption Strategy & Enablement sits within the Operational Data Strategy function in BioPharmaceuticals Clinical Operations and reports to the Director, Adoption, Enablement & Literacy.
The role is accountable for defining and leading the adoption and activation approach for a portfolio of priority digital products, data products, AI-enabled capabilities and new ways of working, ensuring they are embedded into operational workflows and deliver sustainable business value.
Engaging from early product shaping through pilot activation, deployment, scale-up and sustainment, the Associate Director defines target user personas, priority operational use cases, expected user behaviours, workflow entry points and adoption success measures. The role works with Product Managers, Business Process Owners and business users to understand how capabilities affect data flows, decision points, roles and hand-offs, and to redesign workflows so that effective use becomes part of routine practice.
The role designs and leads capability activation pilots, evaluates deployment and scale-up readiness, and uses user feedback, workflow observations, query performance and quantitative usage evidence to recommend improvements to products, processes, enablement approaches and implementation sequencing.
Working in partnership with Product and Transformation Leads, Business Process Owners, Implementation Leads, Change Managers, Learning and senior stakeholders across R&D, the Associate Director provides the link between capability design and effective operational use. The role also develops scalable adoption methods, enablement assets and portfolio-level insights that support decisions on where to pilot, adapt, scale, sustain or reprioritise priority capabilities.
Typical Accountabilities
Capabilityadoption and product activation: Define target user personas, priority operational use cases and expected user behaviours for assigned digital products, AI-enabled capabilities and new ways of working. Map workflow entry points, define adoption success measures and quantitative usage metrics, identify dependencies, and develop activation roadmaps that enable effective adoption within business processes.
Embed data and AI capabilities into daily workflows: map how new capabilities alter existing data flows, decision gates and role boundaries. Partner with Product Managers, Business Process Owners and business users to redesign workflows so the capability becomes the default way of working rather than an optional step
Serve as the voice of the user for product feedback: Conduct user observation, workflow friction mapping and query performance analysis Translate findings into actionable recommendations that improve product usability, workflow integration and operational value.
Run capability activation pilots and user testing: Design and lead pilot programmes for new data products, AI-enabled capabilities and prompt-based workflows. Define practical usage scenarios, onboarding pathways and continuous feedback loops to validate user adoption and operational value before wider deployment.
Evaluate deployment and scale-up readiness: Assess operational readiness by evaluating data literacy, prompt confidence, workflow alignment, support models and business ownership. Provide clear go, adapt or delay recommendations to support successful deployment and sustainable adoption.
Develop capability enablement assets: develop practical resources that eliminate friction at the point of work, including workflow guidance, prompt libraries, job aids, onboarding pathways and power-user communities that support sustained capability adoption.
Monitor adoption health and drive corrective action: define and track indicators of reach, effective use, user behaviour and sustainment; identify where adoption is increasing, declining, inconsistent or superficial; and agree corrective actions with Product, Process and business owners.
Provide portfolio adoption oversight and LT reporting: maintain a consolidated view of adoption performance across priority capabilities and provide regular updates to LT and governance forums on adoption trends, material risks, user and workflow barriers, intervention priorities and recommendations to sustain, adapt, scale or reprioritise capabilities.
Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in business, life sciences or technology; a Master’s degree or MBA is preferred
Demonstrated ability to understand business, user and operational needs and translate them into practical workflows, digital capabilities or AI-enabled ways of working.
Experience working across functions and influencing senior stakeholders to align priorities, resolve challenges and support business decisions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret qualitative and quantitative evidence, analyse workflow performance and usage patterns, identify adoption barriers and recommend practical improvements.
Strong leadership, communication and facilitation skills, with experience leading workshops, influencing decisions and coordinating cross-functional teams without direct authority.
