Based at the Alexion facility in Athlone, the Automation & Controls Lead will own the configuration, operation, maintenance, and administration of process and facility control systems and data historians across all Drug Product manufacturing systems in AAMF. Acting as a core member of the manufacturing systems team, this role leads all automation systems on site and reports to the Senior Manager, Manufacturing Systems. It is a hands-on technical position that solves complex problems through data analysis and scientific methods, with a strong focus on process capability and system reliability. The role works closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Utilities, Tech Services and Quality Assurance, while also driving AI and digitalisation initiatives that support the site’s Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 strategy. Accountabilities:
- Lead the configuration, implementation and lifecycle management of all site automation systems (DCS, PLCs, historians and servers)
- Own system reliability activities including patching, backups, disaster recovery, obsolescence planning and access control
- Manage system integrators and third-party vendors for project and sustaining activities
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to the site Automation team
- Develop, review and approve automation design documentation, standards and SOPs
- Ensure automation systems are delivered, qualified and maintained in compliance with cGMP and internal standards
- Support validation activities, change controls, deviation investigations and audits
- Lead or support automation projects from concept through to handover
- Collaborate cross-functionally to optimise equipment performance and system lifecycle management
- Support training and capability development across the site
- Act as delegate for the Senior Manager, Manufacturing Systems when required
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Significant experience supporting automation systems in GMP manufacturing environments
- Proven experience in Drug Substance or Fill Finish facilities
- In-depth hands-on expertise with the DeltaV DCS platform
- Experience managing and working with system integrators and vendors
- Strong knowledge of control networks (Profibus, Industrial Ethernet)
- Experience with change control, deviations and GMP validation (GAMP)
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
- Experience with OSI PI, SQL Server, virtualisation platforms and IT/OT integration
