We are seeking a graduate in a master's or doctoral program to join our team as a summer intern and work on a highly visible protein engineering project. You will be working on improving structurally aware large language modelsin the protein space to accelerate our in-silico drug development pipeline while collaborating with experts in machine learning, computation biology, and in-silico protein structure prediction.

The Center for Artificial Intelligence (CAI) is a lab focused on applying machine learning research to the toughest challenges at AstraZeneca. We are a team of experts from different fields including Machine Intelligence, Data Science, Real World Evidence and Bioinformatics.

This role is a 4-month paid contract position, which starts in May 2025 and will end in August 2025. Our position will be based in our Mississauga head office and allow for flexible working arrangements working both onsite (3 times per week) and virtually.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop training and fine-tuning strategies for improving large protein models.

  • Identify and prepare datasets for benchmarking structurally aware protein models withtrained structure-based tokenizers.

  • Contribute to a large cross functional team at AstraZeneca responsible for redefining and accelerating our biologics drug development pipeline. 

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Must be a Second year Masters / PhD student with a focus on machine learning/ AI and with a focus on drug discovery.

  • Strong foundational understanding of machine learning and deep learning concepts.

  • Demonstrable record of accomplishment of developing deep learning models used in real world applications.

  • Ability to read and interpret literature in the space of large language models, protein design and adapt the learning to help solve open research problems.

  • Strong practical data science skills including the use of Python packages like pytorch, pandas,numpy, and scikit-learn to transform datasets for model training and benchmarking.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience working in a domain like protein engineering.

  • Experience working in a scientific research environment with cross-functional teams.

  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and its processes.
