Associate Director - Waste Contract Management

Introduction to role

Are you ready to lead the charge in waste contract management and sustainability? As the Associate Director - Waste Contract Management, you will manage our key strategic relationship with our incumbent waste provider on our Macclesfield campus. You will be the crucial link between the customer (MID) and the service delivery organization, ensuring compliance, corporate reporting, and the implementation of innovative solutions within the contract's scope. You'll join the Sustainability Team within Macclesfield Infrastructure Development (MID), requiring strategic road map development and support for sustainability improvement projects. Your efforts will help us achieve our sustainability targets by incorporating standard methodologies in waste minimisation and management.

This opportunity is offered on a 12-month secondment or 12-month Fixed Term Contract basis.

Accountabilities

  • Collaboratively develop and enable the implementation of service strategies within your scope, ensuring supply and optimum performance.

  • You'll drive supplier performance improvement by ensuring key performance measurement indicators are selected and reported on to manage service delivery.

  • Secure agreement on plans from key collaborators, including customers, user groups, and supply organisations.

  • Actively manage relationships with key customers and sustainability managers across the site.

  • Develop and maintain risk management and business continuity plans for the service group in conjunction with supply partners. This will include ensuring compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements relevant to waste management duty of care.

  • Align, connect, and engage with services in the Macclesfield Infrastructure Development delivery chain and other AstraZeneca service functions.

  • Provide technical waste management leadership & governance to support the Macclesfield AZ Sustainability Strategy.

  • Deliver surplus material and waste-related advice and subject matter expertise across the Macclesfield Campus.

  • Provide sustainability advice on operational and facilities management issues to support effective compliance & risk management.

  • Provide tactical surplus elimination and waste management advice on campus operations, facilities, and infrastructure development.

  • Coordinate with finance teams to ensure accurate invoicing and billing against agreed monthly budgets.

  • Contribute auditable figures to develop Mid-term Financial Planning for waste management on-site.

  • Maintain a register of waste-related risks that threaten sustainable campus operations.

  • Follow Campus Sustainability Team processes and agreed operating models.

  • Support governance and delivery of the Macclesfield Sustainability Strategy, chairing Sustainability Working Groups as necessary.

  • Verify key sustainability surplus and waste performance metrics for Management Teams, influencing objectives, targets, and improvement plans.

  • Act as process owner of sustainability aspects of the MID Integrated Management System, driving continuous improvement activities.

  • Provide information, advice & support to Management Teams & line managers regarding surplus minimisation and waste management.

  • Attend Senior Management Reviews and lead internal/external audits against legal and corporate waste requirements.

  • Provide key waste SME input into relevant Tier and Leadership meetings, resolving key safety risks related to waste management.

  • Champion, communicate, mentor, and advise on surplus and waste standard methodologies to foster a positive sustainability culture.

  • Provide training on safe and legal handling and management of waste.

  • Have a proven experience of Classification, Labelling, Handling regulations, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods.

  • Jointly accountable for delivering the governance framework with supply partners, ensuring SLA compliance, technical standards adherence, health & safety targets, environmental policies, statutory requirements, and risk management.

  • Support delivery of the MID Integrated Management System through ownership of identified processes within it.

  • Demonstrate Lean behaviours using relevant tools and techniques to ensure benefits realisation and continuous improvement culture.

  • Submit, manage, and support FM projects working with customers and suppliers to reach successful conclusions.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Experience of supplier and contract management.

  • Requires an individual of graduate calibre or with an equivalent level of experience.

  • Ability to engage, interact and appropriately challenge with multiple customers at different levels across the business.

  • Good solid understanding of the waste management industry.

  • Good working knowledge of contract law.

  • Ability to network internally & externally and to translate this into tangible business improvements.

  • Demonstrable understanding of the AZ business agenda and how MID can drive / impact overall business performance.

  • Ability to deliver through others who they do not directly manage.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Professional qualification in industrial waste management such as a Certificate of Technical Competence (CoTC aka WAMITAB).

  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as CWIM or IEMA.

  • Working knowledge of GMP requirements related to service provisions in a manufacturing environment.

  • In-depth knowledge of the operational needs of pharmaceutical business.

  • Experience of delivering a key strategic sustainability corporate aspect in an industrial setting.
