Introduction to role
Are you ready to make a difference in the lives of people living with cancer? As an Externally Sponsored Research Manager, you will be accountable for the operational coordination and management of review, evaluation, initiation, and conduct of Externally Sponsored Research (ESR) studies in the UK for Oncology disease areas. You will be responsible for delivering an impactful ESR portfolio and supporting the uplift of UK OBU ESR capability and awareness. Acting as the primary link between the Sponsor (Institute) and the AstraZeneca UK Oncology Business Unit, you will work closely with the OBU Medical Team.
Accountabilities
- Support the development of local ESR strategy for OBU portfolio and communicate this to the business.
- Ensure compliance with project management guidelines, external regulations, and internal processes to enable timely delivery of high-quality ESRs.
- Manage the ESR process operationally, including:
- Timely progression of new ESR proposals through review process and active tracking of existing ESRs to ensure milestones are delivered to plan.
- Coordinating departmental meetings related to ESRs, including local review committees and performance updates.
- Developing/negotiating research agreements with sponsors, obtaining expert support from legal and medical teams as necessary.
- Ensuring drug supply is well planned for active/ongoing studies.
- Providing regular study status updates to Medical Leadership team, including ESR performance metrics.
- Communicating with the field medical team regarding actions and requirements.
- Tracking study progress from setup to publication and ensuring appropriate documentation of close-out of completed studies.
- Maintaining complete and accurate data in the ESR operations system.
- Actively monitoring study budgets and tracking financial milestones. Ensuring financial systems are up to date and accurate, liaising with Operations and Finance as required to ensure oversight and financial control.
- Provide support and training for Medical Team on ESR processes and systems, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements and AZ policies and procedures.
- Coordinate appropriate ESR communications strategy, working with Medical Leadership and Field Medical teams to leverage investment in UK ESRs, share knowledge, and accelerate innovative science.
- Act as the primary link between Local and Global teams within AZ regarding ESR activities and act as UK expert in Global forums and local meetings.
- Identify ways to improve customer experience and expand innovative clinical research footprint in the UK.

- Experience of exercising judgment to make decisions when appropriate

- Experience of working cross-functionally/collaboratively both internally and externally
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Previous experience of managing External Sponsored Studies or Clinical Trials
- Experience of working in a Medical Department of a sales & marketing organisation
- Knowledge of UK Marketing Company Head Office structure and a network of contacts within the company
- Experience of supporting more than one manager & a large department and able to prioritise workload effectively
