Position Summary

The Alexion Markets Expansion Area Director (MEAD) is responsible for overseeing Alexion/AZ Rare Disease business in the area under his/her responsibility. The MEAD leads and provides oversight to the area country level AZ Rare Disease Business Units (AZRDBU) in the also called Shared Markets, implementing the defined operating principles, reviewing the MTP and delivering on performance targets. The MEAD will work with the Alexion cross-functional team (Markets Expansion and Global teams and other Alexion support functions) ensuring strategic alignment between the markets under his/her scope and Alexion International and that the AZRDBUs have the right support level and visibility. With his/her in-depth knowledge of the area, explores new opportunities, either extending our portfolio or opening new countries. He/she works proactively to identify and address any challenges, providing strategic guidance, tailored resources, and operational support necessary for the country teams to effectively navigate the RD landscape and achieve their objectives in alignment with AstraZeneca’s global standards and growth ambition.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Acts as RD TA Lead in his/her area of responsibility. He/she supports and guides the local AZ teams leveraging on Alexion know-how and expertise in Rare Diseases
  • Ensures strategic alignment between the markets and Alexion International/Global, acting as extension of Alexion International/Global.
  • Coordinates the Alexion cross-functional teams supporting the market, ensuring that there is the right focus and support in alignment with the Shared Markets operating principles
  • In alignment with the AZ Country President, he/she oversees the country RD business, conducts business performance reviews, ensures that execute on commitments and that Alexion RD products have the right level of resources.
  • Delivers on annual performance targets, maximizing value for the RD portfolio in the long-term
  • Reviews the countries MTP, challenging the team to set aspirational goals and deploy adequate resources
  • Has a strong understanding of the markets under his/her responsibility, anticipates related trends and risks, and proposes action plans to respond to changes in market to ensure Alexion’s business sustainability
  • Explores with AZ local teams opportunities for market expansion and supports the preparation of the business cases
  • Plays a pivotal role in facilitating the successful establishment of AZRDBUs across new expansion markets within his/her designated area. This involves closely collaborating with local country teams to ensure they gain a comprehensive understanding of the unique RD dynamics. Additionally, he/she works proactively to identify and address any challenges, providing strategic guidance, tailored resources, and operational support necessary for the country teams to effectively navigate the RD landscape and achieve their objectives
  • Is a member of the Alexion Markets Expansion Leadership Team, contributing to the definition and execution of the overall commercial strategies in the Shared Markets. Is also a member of the AZ Area Leadership team, reporting dotted line to the AZ AVP.
  • Participates of TA Summits and Commercial Operations Forums within Alexion International
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with AZ country/regional leadership teams and other external stakeholders
  • Provides feedback to the performance appraisal of the RDBU Leads and cross-functional team members
  • Acts in the best interest for AZ/Alexion overall; models the company values and holds self accountable for ensuring work meets the highest standards of ethics, compliance and quality

Qualifications

  • Country Manager, BUD capabilities required
  • Excellent track-record of managing or working in cross-functional teams, being able to drive team members towards a shared goal
  • Proven commercial leadership experience, with track record overseeing product launches in rare diseases
  • Preferably region and/or country market expertise/experience in relevant region and key countries within the region
  • Understanding of the policy environment in RD for access and execution of related reimbursement and launch strategies
  • Strong knowledge of business and financial planning with a track record of delivering results
  • Broad cultural orientation, with experience of working outside local market or in an international context.
  • Seniority and gravitas for high level discussions with AZ colleagues at CP and Area VP level

Education

  • Master Degree or higher education (MD, Phd, PharmD, etc.) including strong scientific background
  • Fluency in English
