This role leads the strategy and delivery of health, safety and environmental programs across a complex, fast‑moving site, turning regulation and standards into clear action that protects people, ensures compliance and keeps operations resilient.
You will work shoulder‑to‑shoulder with senior leaders, technical experts and frontline teams to embed consistent standards, strengthen assurance and drive continuous learning. Your influence will extend beyond day‑to‑day compliance to long‑term risk reduction, operational excellence and community trust. How will you translate complex requirements into a confident, proactive SHE cultures that others want to follow?
Accountabilities:
Standards and First‑Line Assurance: Lead implementation of AZ OneSHE Standards, Procedures and Guidelines, establishing a robust first line of assurance that is transparent, auditable and trusted.
Regulatory Compliance and Governance: Own the regulatory compliance assurance program, using the AZ SHE Legislation System tool (Red on Line) to screen requirements, assess applicability, identify gaps and drive timely closure to full compliance.
Culture, Learning and HOP: Promote a positive SHE culture with the site leadership team, embedding human and organizational performance principles to strengthen learning, reduce repeat events and build psychological safety.
Strategy and Alignment: Provide strong input to regional SHE strategy, ensuring local plans align with and reinforce broader regional and global objectives, and translate strategy into actionable roadmaps.
Complex Problem Solving: Anticipate and resolve varied, high‑impact issues requiring sound judgement and innovative solutions, balancing risk, regulatory expectations and business continuity.
Regulatory and Community Interface: Serve as the primary interface with external regulatory bodies, ensure timely, quality engagement and maintain effective community liaison on all SHE matters.
Change Leadership and Influence: Instigate and actively manage ongoing change across the organization, navigating uncertainty through clear communication, stake-holder engagement and credible influence with senior leaders and partner functions.
Performance and Insight: Establish leading and lagging indicators, track performance, and translate insights into prioritized actions that improve outcomes and demonstrate value to the business.
Essential Skills/Experience:
- In-depth specialist knowledge of one subject area that is key to the business, or a comprehensive understanding of the theories and practice in a wide number of specialist areas
- Requires a degree and further qualifications in a scientific/engineering subject area
- Experience of managing a team of senior direct reports with mixed specialisms
- Experience in a manufacturing, engineering, or Research & Development environment
- Good appreciation of SHE processes and policies, and have senior management, consultancy or advisory experience in influencing strategy
- Significant experience in people management and networking in a matrix organisation and in managing financial budgets
- Full and detailed knowledge of all relevant Safety, Health and Environment legislation and management and relevant International Standards Organization / British Standards requirements
- Specialist experience within a they function or a closely related field
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Advanced specialist experience in a SHE department or related - subject area
