Senior Site Director, AstraZeneca Gothenburg

The Senior Site Director for AstraZeneca R&D Gothenburg is accountable for shaping and delivering the direction and operational performance of the AstraZeneca Gothenburg site, aligned with enterprise and functional priorities. In this role you’ll partner closely with the Site Leadership Team and enterprise stakeholders to ensure the site operates as a high-performing, integrated R&D environment. This includes driving cross-site learning, strengthening scientific and operational excellence, and leading continuous improvement in how work is delivered across disciplines. Although the role will mainly have an internal focus, you will also represent the Gothenburg site externally in line with agreed mandates and corporate guidance.

The position is placed at AstraZeneca’s vibrant R&D site in the lovely city of Gothenburg in Sweden where you will be part of an international, open-minded and creative working atmosphere based on collaboration and innovation.

What you’ll do

Organisational effectiveness & transformation

  • Reviews and evolves site organization, roles, and ways of working to ensure the site remains fit for future needs.
  • Drives continuous improvement in productivity, efficiency, and quality of delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI and data-driven approaches to improve organizational performance 
  • Leads and prioritises site-level transformation initiatives, ensuring delivery of tangible improvements in performance and ways of working
  • Accelerates adoption of AI and digital capabilities across the site by connecting teams, scaling best practices, and building communities of practice to enable effective use in day-to-day work
  • Builds a strong team with the capability and confidence to lead through change and deliver results.

Collaboration & site environment

  • Strengthens collaboration across functions and teams, creating the conditions for effective delivery and shared ownership
  • Supports initiatives that build connection, engagement, and a strong sense of community across the site, with a focus on enabling performance,
  • Ensures clear, consistent communication of priorities and progress across the site
  • Works with Corporate Affairs to align messaging and strengthen AstraZeneca’s presence and reputation in Gothenburg

External representation & partnerships

  • Represents AstraZeneca Gothenburg across relevant industry, academic, governmental, and public forums where it supports site priorities
  • Builds and maintains strategic external relationships that strengthen the site’s position as a leading R&D hub
  • Hosts senior visits and contributes to AstraZeneca’s impact in the local life science ecosystem

Crisis readiness

  • Leads site-level crisis preparedness and response, ensuring alignment with enterprise governance
  • Maintains readiness of the Crisis Management Team and ensures effective coordination with global and national structures

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in a relevant scientific or related discipline
  • Strong scientific understanding combined with the ability to operate across functions
  • Broad leadership experience across R&D and/or operational environments
  • Experience leading organizational change and driving performance improvement
  • Proven ability to work across complex stakeholder environments and influence at senior levels, with demonstrated impact
  • Strong understanding of AI enabled ways of working and digital transformation.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI and data-driven approaches to improve organisational performance 
  • Track record of delivering results and building high-performing teams
  • Experience with Facilities Management, running modern facilities with robotics and AI is desirable.

With your excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills you have the ability to influence strategically to obtain desired outcomes while maintaining effective, positive organisational relationships. You operate effectively across boundaries in a matrix research environment to influence both internal and external stakeholders, including senior management. Your passion, strong vision and drive to succeed together with key qualities like people skills and entrepreneurial working style will make you a great leader of the AstraZeneca Gothenburg site!
