Analytical Chemistry Summer Internship

Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) are the bridge that turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.
We are looking to recruit for 10-week* summer internships in Analytical Chemistry in Macclesfield, UK.
You will join one of our project teams working with world class scientists to progress the development of life-changing medicines! You will have the opportunity to learn about analytical techniques in-depth, develop your investigative skills and lead your own 10-week* analytical chemistry-based project. Your independent project will be supporting the development of pharmaceutical drugs by using state-of-the-art analytical techniques. This may include chromatographic (HPLC, GC, CE, SFC), spectroscopic (NMR UV, FTIR), hyphenated (LC-MS, GC-MS) and other essential techniques (ICP-OES and XRPD). You will ensure that work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
You will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills to extend your proficiency as a scientist by presenting your work to other scientists and wider teams that will enhance your communication skills.
AstraZeneca has partnered with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences programme, to support chemists from minoritised racial and ethnic backgrounds pursue careers in the chemical sciences. Whilst there are numerous positions available in our analytical teams at least one internship is being offered to the Broadening Horizons Cohort to support this programme and our commitments to it.
Essential Candidate Requirements:
- Currently undertaking an undergraduate degree in Chemistry or related discipline (e.g. Natural Sciences)
- Should have completed the first/second year of their degree, and be starting the second/third year or study.
- Able to provide an expected time commitment of 37.5 hours per Monday-Friday working week on Campus between 23rd June – 29th August 2025.
A successful candidate in this role should ideally have:
- Strong teamworking skills
- Ability to show leadership and initiative
- Ability to demonstrate their background in analytical chemistry knowledge, through university studies and/or previous work experience
- Practical laboratory skills through university or previous work experience
