Introduction to role

AstraZeneca is pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-saving breakthrough medicines that improve patients’ lives. Medical Affairs plays a strategic role in shaping the performance and impact of our brands, connecting scientific excellence with real-world practice. As a Medical Science Liaison in Cardiovascular, the focus is on building scientific partnerships with Key External Experts (KEEs) and other healthcare professionals, providing high-quality, up-to-date medical information and insights. Around 60% of the role is field-based, working closely with an office-based Medical Affairs Manager for the therapeutic area. By combining deep scientific and medical expertise with business awareness and strong communication skills, this role helps transform evolving science into better cardiovascular care.

Accountabilities

Engage in scientific exchange and insight generation by staying current with cardiovascular science, guidelines, and treatment paradigms through literature review, congress attendance, and regular KEE interactions. Execute the medical components of account plans in line with agreed budgets, priorities, and timelines. Build and maintain strong relationships with KEEs, understanding their interests and perspectives, and develop robust territory knowledge to share meaningful customer insights with internal stakeholders. Discuss key data sets with experts to identify evidence gaps, patient pathways, and treatment challenges in areas of unmet medical need, aligned with the therapeutic area strategy. Present data and evolving treatment approaches in one-to-one meetings with KEEs and in internal forums such as Journal Clubs. Initiate and organize scientific meetings and events in partnership with KEEs to explore different aspects of the cardiovascular therapeutic area and brand. Create scientific digital content such as newsletters and approved emails as part of digital medical plans for healthcare professionals. Ensure timely, accurate documentation of all external interactions in dedicated systems and respond to medical information queries via the medical information platform. Support bridging or early access programs where relevant. Continuously refine communication and insight-gathering skills through training, coaching, and joint field visits with the line manager and colleagues. Collaborate with MSLs from other countries or therapeutic areas to exchange best practices and evolve the role. Attend national cardiovascular congresses and, when required, international meetings.

Drive cross-functional scientific exchange by supporting strategic partnerships with Marketing to deliver the brand’s cross-functional core plan. Provide in-depth disease and therapy education to key account managers and other internal teams when needed. Contribute to the operation of AstraZeneca-sponsored clinical studies, including site identification, feasibility support, and study initiation activities.

Manage scientific partnerships and initiatives that transform healthcare delivery by overseeing Externally Sponsored Research (ESR), grants, donations, and third-party scientific sponsorships in line with strategy and compliance requirements. Identify potential partners and work with KEEs and Sick Funds to design and implement projects that can lead to local practice change in cardiovascular care. Explore and develop real-world data initiatives and care transformation projects as part of the therapeutic area medical team.

Ensure full compliance with all external regulations and internal policies by completing all mandatory training on time and maintaining a thorough understanding of AstraZeneca policies related to MSL responsibilities, external interactions, ethics, publications, congresses, meetings, external funding, and promotional standards.
