The new R&D BioPharmaceuticals organisation brings together research and development teams, from discovery through to late-stage development for Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolic (CVRM), Respiratory, Inflammatory and Autoimmune (RIA) therapy areas, and opportunistically for Microbial Sciences and Neuroscience.

Our Discovery Sciences team operates from truly state-of-the-art centres spanning the UK, US and Sweden. You’ll work with some of the most knowledgeable technological experts in the industry, all collaborating on high-profile drug discovery projects.

You’ll be in a global pharmaceutical environment but also exposed to strong rigorous academic science. For example, every postdoc has an external academic mentor to ensure we are working and publishing at the highest level in a field. What’s more, you’ll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who’ll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career.

A unique opportunity to join a World Leading Hit Discovery group, working in a multi-disciplinary lab with synthetic and analytical chemists, biologists, programmers and engineers developing catalytic technologies supporting AZ drug discovery projects.

This is an opportunity to work on a joint BBSRC funded project with University of Bristol, UK (Profs Paul Race and Chris Willis) and AstraZeneca on Diels-Alderases.and their application in Drug Discovery Chemistry. The position is based in the AstraZeneca iLAB, Hit Discovery, Discovery Sciences in Gothenburg, Sweden. You'll have responsibility for all aspects of evaluating the potential of DA enzymes as synthetic catalysts for drug discovery.

Education and Experience required:


  • PhD in Biochemistry/Synthetic Biology /Biotechnology/ Organic Chemistry
  • Experience of using recombinant enzymes/ whole cells to perform biotransformations
  • Experience with analytical tools e.g. UPLC-MS, GCMS, NMR
  • Molecular biology: cloning, expression, protein purification - experience in a variety of expression systems desirable
  • Track record of work published in good scientific journals


  • Interest in drug discovery/hit finding strategies
  • Interest/experience in using automation/robotics/Tecan/Mosquito/Andrew
  • Interest/experience in high throughput experimentation and data-processing
  • Post-doctoral experience 1-3 years in a related area

Skills and Capabilities required:

  • Strong technical, organisational, interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • A genuine interest inpharmaceutical research

This is a 3 year programme.  2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1 year extension which will be merit based.  The role will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a competitive salary on offer
