Oncology Corporate and Internal Communications Lead

At AstraZeneca, we’re looking for an Oncology Corporate and Internal Communications Lead, to join us in Gaithersburg, MD or Cambridge, UK and contribute to our vision of one day eliminating cancer as a cause of death.

A critical member of the Global Oncology Corporate Affairs leadership team, the Oncology Corporate and Internal Communications Lead will design, develop and deliver impactful corporate communications programs that build, enhance and protect the reputation of AstraZeneca Oncology to shape and redefine the cancer care environment through thought leadership and partnership with industry, patient, academic and legislative organizations that share our ambition to lead a revolution in oncology and eliminate cancer as a cause of death. This role will also deliver corporate communications programs that shape the employee experience for all AZ Oncology employees, engaging them in the delivery of growth and TA leadership as well as making AZ Oncology a great place to work.


AZ Oncology Corporate Communications

  • Develop and deliver effective communications programs that elevate AZ Oncology’s reputation as a leader, with a focus on world-class AZ Oncology Narrative message and materials development and promotion and use in all global markets and channels, as well as messages and outreach that support I&D, STEM and R&D hub community activity.
  • Co-Develop and deliver effective leadership positioning for Senior Executive heads of the Oncology Business Unit (OBU), and Oncology R&D (ORD), and select LT members that elevate them as a thought leaders in Oncology and global business innovation and complements / supports AZ Oncology strategy and brand objectives in partnership with Oncology corporate affairs leadership team.
  • Maximise AZ Oncology’s corporate non-branded presence at key congresses and leadership forums with compelling content and thought leadership activity that brings our science and corporate narrative in oncology to life.
  • Lead oncology corporate digital activity in partnership and coordination with the Global Digital team in support of our AZ Oncology reputation and thought leadership through externally facing social media activity. Coordinate and drive leadership presence on externally facing social media channels in support of our AZ Oncology reputation and drives engagement
  • Development and delivery of signature programs/initiatives that contribute to enhancing AZ reputation in Oncology and differentiating from competition, including but not limited to New Normal, Same Cancer, Lung Ambition Alliance and affiliated initiatives around our leadership in the early detection, testing and treatment of cancer as well as equitable access to cancer care.
  • Build collaborative relationships with Market Access, Patient Advocacy, Public Affairs, Regional and Country communications teams to enable effective planning and implementation of programs at the global and local level. 

AZ Oncology Internal Communications

  • Drive employee understanding of and engagement with the Oncology strategy, programs and senior leaders – including an impactful oncology presence at Senior Leader Meetings and robust medical congress internal engagement through creative and authentic internal communications and events that inform, inspire and motivate our people
  • Create effective platforms and programs that support effective leader communication with a focus on the OBU and ORD Heads as well as OBU and ORD LT members within their respective franchises, supporting enhanced visibility and leader profiles across the LTs
  • Provide internal communications support for the Oncology Global Medical Affairs organization that supports the development of skill-building programs needed for a world class Medical Affairs function as well as an effective leader communication platform for new OBU GMA Head.
  • Create a dynamic and productive work environment at US R&D sites including Gaithersburg, NYC, Waltham and SF campuses through effective employee communications and engagement programs that provide for a safe, informed and motivated employee population in partnership with site operations and site leadership team members.
  • Play a leading role in shaping the culture of Oncology GCA, improving coordination and collaboration across sub-teams, optimizing the new Onco GCA model while also ensuring effective performance development/management across the Onco GCA Corporate and Internal Comms team, including identifying and demonstrably advancing talent, driving focus on sustainability and enhancing diversity and inclusion and culture of lifelong learning.

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience                                                             


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, marketing or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with STEM education experience preferred
  • 10+ years working in biopharma (ideally across multiple functions such as

commercial or R&D)

  • Experience of working in large scale multi-national companies
  • Experience of driving transformational change communications and working cross-functionally
  • Advanced external and internal communications skills (including management of new digital/video tools and  copywriting)
  • Good understanding of all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry
  • Communications agency management
  • Ability to coach and influence senior leaders on their communication effectiveness
  • Ability to set and manage priorities, resources, goals, and project initiatives
  • First-rate coordination, collaboration, organization and multi-tasking skills
  • Project management skills
  • Good understanding of all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry
