AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through five key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, HER2 and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

Position Description:

The Head of Medical Information, Oncology Business Unit (OBU) is accountable for the Global and US Medical Information services and MI content deliverables to ensure timely communication of approved medical information content.  The Head of Medical Information is responsible for the strategic planning, prioritization, and execution of Medical Information-related product/franchise deliverables across the OBU franchises, including responses to medical inquiries from HCPs, development of scientific content to support Medical Affairs teams, and scientific review of medical and promotional materials. 

This role will be accountable for:

  • Overall Medical Information strategy and execution across OBU Medical, including global, regional, and local US medical teams
  • Create and deliver vision of future Medical Information including:
    • Expand digital and self-service web-based medical information across markets
  • Ensure medical and scientific accuracy of all content through the US Promotional Materials AstraZeneca Approval Process
  • Build Global AZ Oncology Medical Information community
  • Contribute to the development of  global standards, tools, templates, and training for skills and capabilities in medical information
  • Deliver strategic direction and alignment for medical information teams across OBU Medical
  • Represent the Medical Information function in the review of business policies that impact medical information
  • Delivery of medical information insights and analytics to support therapeutic/franchise priorities and strategic business decisions across the OBU
  • Partner with medical (e.g., TAs, Markets) and commercial functions (e.g., Global Insights & Analytics, Global Commercial Digital & Innovation) to develop innovative  practices for content development and delivery
  • The Head of Medical Excellence will report directly to the VP, Medical Capabilities, OBU and oversees a large team of medical information personnel and out-sourced providors

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Advanced degree in Scientific Discipline or applicable Health Sciences field (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD)
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in pharmaceutical industry with at least 3 years in either Global or US Drug/Medical Information functions Comprehensive understanding of Medical Affairs deliverables in the development and commercialization of pharmaceutical products
  • Experience of successful influencing cross functionally, cross-culturally and cross-brands
  • Experience effectively leading multi-cultural, multi-location teams

Desirable

  • Post-graduate specialty training or clinical experience in hematology/oncology therapeutic area
  • Drug Information residency or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience in functions outside of Medical Affairs, e.g. marketing, commercial roles or financial roles
  • Experience managing managers
