The Associate Director, Business Planning and Operations (BPO), supports the Late-stage Development Respiratory, Inflammation and Auto-Immunity (Late-stage Development RIA) organization with critical aspects of its business processes, change management and continuous improvement. This involves the project management of new and innovative processes, optimizing existing processes such as capacity planning and management, and optimizing interactions with vendors and counterparts in other Process groups in R&D.


  • Leads capacity management process for function (including subfunctions), including forecasting, reporting, tracking and monitoring/improvement of progress
  • Will work closely with Head of Business Planning and Operations to ensure optimal usage of available resources, both people and funds, to deliver the greatest level of productivity and maximum value for the organization.
  • Will facilitate capacity and elements of resource management at both the Late-stage Development RIA functional level and if needed, also at the subfunctional level, such as driving that accurate data in e.g. Planit, Capaciter and Assigner are being used as the basis for well-informed recommendations and decisions.
  • Will be a key player in interactions with other fora for capacity management, such as RIA Portfolio Team led by GPPM and skill-based capacity teams in e.g. DevOps and CMO.
  • Will work with Late-stage Development RIA Leadership Team on developing and implementing process improvement initiatives.
  • Will assist with data analytics for governance interactions and business communications.  
  • Shares information on dates, priorities, assumptions and an aligned view across the Late-stage Development RIA organization of what the portfolio looks like including changes, risks, rebalancing and gaps.
  • Ensures balanced project teams across Late RIA TEs and capabilities
  • Produces dashboards to support leadership team's view of portfolio progress, gaps, actuals compliance, overtime visualization, etc
  • Develops strategies for talent management, staff training and recruitment.
  • Defines, implements and monitors the business processes and leads process improvement and change management projects within Late RIA.
  • Works with the Late RIA Leadership team to document and communicate the strategic goals of business processes, change management and continuous improvement.
  • Partners with Early RIA, Late CVRM and Development Operations to ensure alignment of portfolio planning, sourcing strategy, resource management and risk management activities.
  • Partners with AZ Risk Officers and Quality Manager to ensure alignment of risk management activities and with R&D BioPharmaceutical Communications Director to ensure a high level of communication of department activities.
  • Lead complex projects (eg, improvement initiatives, CAPAs) in Late RIA, partnering with other functions outside of Late RIA as necessary to drive enterprise-wide solutions.
  • Requires regular contact with persons of influence and in decision-making positions within AstraZeneca globally. 
  • Requires a high level of cultural sensitivity, interactive communication, negotiation and effective collaboration. This necessitates considerable tact, discretion and persuasion to obtain desired outcomes while maintaining ongoing professional relationships.


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in providing business and impact analysis to senior leaders
  • Familiar with PLANIT, Capacitor, and/or Assigner
  • Experience in strategy development and portfolio management within a pharmaceutical or clinical environment
  • Strong scientific background and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and communicate with stakeholders
  • Ability to engage, influence and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving and delivery-focused attitude
  • A high level of cultural sensitivity.
