Introduction to role

We are seeking a Senior SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) Specialist for our new API plant in Dublin. This role is pivotal in fostering a strong safety culture and achieving operational excellence within a high hazard API manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with plant operations and engineering teams to mitigate risks, ensure safety, and maintain environmental compliance.

Accountabilities

  • Develop and execute site SHE strategies, ensuring alignment with corporate goals, Irish and EU regulatory frameworks (e.g., COMAH, REACH, EPA), and best industry practices.
  • Act as a senior SHE advisor to the site leadership, providing expert guidance on safety, risk management, and environmental performance.
  • Liaise with global SHE teams to ensure consistency in SHE standards and share best practices.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on safety reviews for new process and material introductions, modifications, and operational changes to ensure the safety of personnel and plant and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Audit the integrity of safety instrumented systems (SIS), emergency shutdown systems, and safety-critical control measures.
  • Lead and participate in root cause analyses and investigations for incidents and near misses, driving the implementation of effective corrective actions.
  • Lead and manage the implementation of designated SHE programs for API operations.
  • Assist with the onsite Permit to Work processes, ensuring control of high-risk work activities (e.g., hot work, confined space entry).
  • Lead the development and delivery of advanced safety training programs for all plant personnel, contractors, and visitors, with a focus on high-risk operations.
  • Develop and maintain the plant’s emergency response plans in collaboration with the site emergency response teams and local emergency services, including fire, chemical spill, and toxic release scenarios.
  • Coordinate regular emergency drills and training exercises, ensuring readiness for any potential SHE-related incidents.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • +5 years of SHE related experience, ideally within the chemical, pharmaceutical, or manufacturing sectors.
  • Strong understanding of Irish and EU SHE regulations, including COMAH, REACH, EPA standards, and HSA requirements.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with a proven track record of influencing cultural change and improving SHE performance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with employees, contractors, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with a focus on risk management and continuous improvement.
