Introduction to role

In partnership with IBEC and Technological University Dublin (Tallaght Campus), Alexion is offering a two-year blended learning apprenticeship programme leading to a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science as a Laboratory Technician. This opportunity allows you to gain a national qualification while working and begin to carve out a career in the Life Sciences industry.

Accountabilities

As a Laboratory Technician Apprentice, you will gain valuable hands-on practical experience in a GMP and GLP certified biopharmaceutical laboratory environment, alongside off-site theoretical training with TUD. You will have a dedicated QC mentor to support your development as a Laboratory Technician. The Quality Control laboratory at Alexion is a Centre of Excellence supporting all QC activities for Alexion’s rare disease late-stage and commercial products. Our world-class facility includes chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, and microbiological capabilities, supporting the testing of drug substances, drug products, components, and devices.

Over the two years, your apprenticeship will involve:

  • Sample collection
  • Sample logging
  • Organising sample shipments
  • PH checks
  • Physical testing
  • Glassware maintenance
  • Daily calibration of equipment
  • Ordering of consumables and chemicals
  • Raw material testing

The programme will commence in September 2025, based at the Alexion, Dublin, Centre of Excellence Laboratories three days per week and two days per week with the Technological University Dublin (Tallaght Campus) under the approval of SOLAS. Successful completion of Level 6 offers the option to progress to a Level 7 Bachelor of Science Degree as a Laboratory Analyst.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • A pass or Grade O6 in five leaving certificate subjects, two of which must be maths and a science-related subject.
  • 250 CAO points, and/or its equivalent (between 18 and under 23 years)
  • Candidates with a FETAC Level 5 qualification in a related field will be considered
  • SOLAS Apprentice approval
  • Ability to follow written procedures with close attention to detail
