At AstraZeneca we win through science, it’s at the heart of our every success. That science is only possible when we all work together – we’ll always make sure you’re clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to really show what science can do.

We are currently seeking a data scientist with experience in drug discovery and/or development to join us as a Computational DMPK & Safety Team Leader within the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence department in Clinical Pharmacology & Safety Sciences (CPSS) unit at AstraZeneca.  CPSS partners across the R&D Units for the optimization and selection of small molecules and new modalities as novel candidate drugs.

You will lead a team of data scientists to develop and implement strategies to capture, integrate and mine large-scale data sets across the preclinical and clinical safety domains to facilitate the development of patient-centric risk assessments. The Computational DMPK & Safety team will focus on the development and application of state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence to enhance the absorption, disposition, metabolism and elimination (ADME) and safety profiles of our new drug candidates. As Computational DMPK & Safety Team Leader you will also be responsible for maintaining and delivering preclinical safety data search and visualization tools for a variety of audiences.

You’ll use your computational skills for hypothesis generation, providing decision support to projects and to explain complex relationships. Your ability to bridge the understanding of models and modelling across diverse disciplines is key.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will develop the strategy and lead team of data scientists for the analysis and mining of large data sets to build confidence in the safety and ADME profiles of our drug candidates
  • Develop and maintain data management and computational services to allow effective use of models by the business
  • You’ll drive the development and application of predictive models and tools, including machine learning approaches, appropriate to the different phases of drug discovery and development but particularly in the chemistry design stage
  • Contribute to departmental strategies for data management and data structures to better enable modelling and informatics
  • You will work closely with CPSS scientists providing computational support, technical expertise and input to influence scientific, project and departmental decisions.
  • Train and mentor R&D scientists in the use of models to aid projects progression and decision making

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in a life science, data science, informatics, statistics or other relevant field, with track record of impactful publications
  • Track record of leading impactful delivery data science projects and successful manager of people in a life science organization
  • Experience with and knowledge of advanced machine learning and data mining technologies with applications in one of the following areas: predictive and statistical modelling, machine learning and text mining (e.g. R, scikit learn, etc.)
  • Demonstrated computational skills in a rapid prototyping platform (Python, Matlab etc.)
  • Experience with web service development and test driven development
  • Experience with databases including a working knowledge of ETL tools such as SnapLogic & knowledge of common database query languages e.g. SQL
  • Experience in influencing organizations to adopt new computational approaches.

  • Cheminformatics or medicinal chemistry knowledge
  • Knowledge of software development in one or more high level language (e.g. C++)
  • Experience with or knowledge of computational chemistry techniques, such as structure-based drug design, molecular dynamics, molecular docking, quantitative structure activity relationships, pharmacodynamics, and cheminformatics.

Location: Cambridge, UK or Gothenburg, Sweden
