Scientist, Immunology Cell Therapy Discovery (In Vitro Focus)
Location: Cambridge, MA, USA
AstraZeneca is a science-led biopharmaceutical company committed to transforming patient outcomes. We seek a curious, collaborative Scientist to advance novel cell therapies for autoimmune and immunology indications. This hands-on research role centers on in vitro work and cross-functional collaboration across our discovery teams.
Role Overview
Design, optimize, and execute in vitro assays to identify and validate cell therapy targets for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Apply your expertise with primary human cells, multiplex flow cytometry, cytokine detection, and assay development to generate impactful data and move programs from discovery to translation. Work closely with cross-functional groups to ensure rigorous science and timely milestones.
Key Responsibilities
In vitro discovery: Develop and run primary cell-based assays and co-culture systems; Apply multiplex flow cytometry, cytokine detection, and advanced experimental design to validate targets and characterize engineered cell therapies (e.g., T cells, CAR-based modalities).
Data & analytics: Apply a rigorous, data-driven approach to experimental design and decision-making; utilize analysis tools like FlowJo, OMIQ, and Prism.
Collaboration: Work with engineering, genomics, translational science, and clinical teams; communicate plans and findings clearly across groups and to leadership; foster a collegial and collaborative lab environment.
Project delivery: Maintain precise experimental documentation; Collaborate on project planning, track progress, and focus on experimental efficiency to achieve milestones.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education: MS with 3+ years, or BS with 5+ years industry experience in immunology, autoimmunity, cell therapy, or related field.
In vitro expertise:
Primary human cell culture, including functional immune cell-based assays and co-culture systems
Multi-color flow cytometry and immunophenotyping
Multiplex cytokine detection assays
Assay development and optimization
Experience with engineered cell products (e.g., T cell subsets, CAR-based modalities); familiarity with target discovery and CAR T transduction and/or gene editing
Data proficiency:
Strong experimental design, analysis, and interpretation
Proficiency with common analysis tools (FlowJo, Prism)
Ability to integrate complex datasets to guide decisions
Working style:
Demonstrated independence and adaptability in a dynamic environment
Excellent record-keeping and reliable delivery to timelines
Communication:
Clear, concise written and verbal communication
Proven ability to communicate complex scientific concepts across multidisciplinary teams
Desired Qualifications and Skills
Autoimmunity and inflammation experience: Familiarity with in vitro model systems for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.
Industry background: Experience in pharmaceutical or biotech drug discovery and development.
