The VP of Genomic Medicine will be an experienced leader who will oversee the Genomics Medicine Unit in Cambridge, MA. He/she will also partner with colleagues in other scientific disciplines contributing towards the development of gene therapeutics and advancing them towards clinical testing. Demonstrated expertise in AAV vectorology, translational research in rare diseases and delivery of clinical candidates for development is desirable.

You will be responsible for:

  • As a member of the Research LT, set priorities that are aligned with the strategic direction of the Rare Disease Category’s Leadership to grow the rare disease portfolio at Alexion.

  • Lead and manage a group of ~80 scientists responsible for conceiving and developing new gene therapeutic concepts, AAV vector design and development, and translational research to advance the concepts toward clinical testing

  • Partner closely with members of the Rare Disease Unit (RDU) and members of AstraZeneca’s Discovery Sciences genomic medicine group to identify, implement and progress new gene therapy projects.

  • Partner with other disciplines of integrated drug discovery and development, especially pharmacokinetics and drug disposition, Drug Safety, Regulatory, and Translational Sciences, to develop translational preclinical packages for gene therapy clinical candidates. Collaborate closely with Product Development & Clinical Supply to identify and develop manufacturing processes for clinical grade viral vectors at scale.

  • Ensure scientific strategy for each drug discovery project is rigorous, aligned and effective.

  • Influence the global external environment through thought leadership, external visibility and active engagement with key opinion leaders.

  • Build upon Alexion’s leadership in rare diseases through publication of peer-reviewed research articles, patent filings and speaking engagements at national and international conferences.

  • Foster a collaborative and productive environment between Alexion RDU and academic biomedical researchers.

Management:

  • Ensure all activities executed comply with legal and regulatory requirements and with Alexion corporate policies.

  • Build an "intelligence" capability and external network of biomedical research collaborations and advisors to find the most attractive gene therapy indications.

  • Ensure projects are adequately resourced and prioritized to deliver on objectives.
